Zenith Golf Travel Guide | Part 2 | Fota Island

There are some golf courses in Ireland that need little introduction, and Fota Island Golf Club is certainly one of them. Nestled in the heart of Cork Harbour, Fota is a name that carries weight in Irish golf. It has hosted the Irish Open, attracted golfers from all over the world, and remains one of the country’s most scenic and enjoyable courses to play. But we’re here to talk about the important stuff – the golf, the grub, and, of course, the coffee.

Best Breakfast: Fota Island Hotel

Let’s start the day right. Normally, we’d be grabbing a breakfast roll from a service station en route, but this time, we changed it up. A proper sit-down breakfast at the Fota Island Hotel. A solid decision. I went for the avocado and eggs – simple, fresh, and exactly what you need before taking on 18 holes. A decent selection of options on the menu, good portion sizes, and, thankfully, none of that over-the-top fine dining nonsense. Just good food done well.

The Golf: Fota Island Golf Club

Fota is a unique test. It’s not a link, nor is it your typical parkland – it’s somewhere in between. Lush fairways, big greens, and water hazards that love to catch an overconfident approach shot. It has three courses: Deerpark (the championship course), Belvelly, and Barryscourt. We played the Deerpark course, the one that has hosted the Irish Open, and it didn’t disappoint.

The front nine is relatively straightforward, allowing you to get into your rhythm, but don’t let your guard down. The 8th and 9th holes will test your accuracy, especially if you get a little too casual off the tee. The back nine is where the real challenge lies – tighter fairways, elevation changes, and the ever-present danger of water. The 18th hole is a cracker, a long par 5 where you’ll be tempted to go for the green in two (probably a bad idea, but we won’t stop you).

In terms of course condition, Fota is always in pristine shape. The greens are true, the fairways are immaculate, and the bunkers… well, let’s just say they’re well-placed. Overall, a course that’s fair but demanding – it rewards good play but won’t be kind if you’re having an off day.

Post-Round Coffee: Bakestone Café

After a solid 18 holes, you’ll need a caffeine fix. While Fota Island itself does a decent coffee, we’d recommend heading just a short drive away to Bakestone Café. It’s a local gem, known for great coffee, top-notch baked goods, and a relaxed atmosphere. A flat white and one of their homemade pastries is a fine way of finishing the day, regardless of how you've played.

Fota Island Golf Club is a must-play for any golfer making their way through Munster. The course is stunning, the challenge is real, and the overall experience is top-tier. Add in a quality breakfast at the hotel and a post-round coffee at Bakestone, and you’ve got the perfect golf day.

If you haven’t played yet, what are you waiting for?
